I have 2 pairs of headphones: 1. Sony MDR-7506 Professionals , and 2. these cat ear headphones. While certainly not close to the fullness and clarity of studio-grade monitors, these have a monitor-like clarity to them which is great for the price and intention of this product. Even a lot of non kid-friendly headphones in this price range sound dampened and "hollow". These definitely sound "thinner" and quieter than many of the headphones between $20-$50, but sometimes soft headphones that don't blow your ears out can make for a good listening experience.
note - "monitor-like clarity" does not mean they sound fully eq'd, bass boosted to heck like Beats. I mean they sound fairly true-to-source.
There's virtually no sub, which is great for kids (and adults who are trying to kick a bad habit of listening to music too loud). Volume doesn't go too high. I've only really tested these with hip-hop and electronic and I'm impressed with how crisp and clear kicks sound. Sub is cut, but you still get a sense of the lows with a clear kick and low-mid frequencies.
I'm considering using these as "writing" headphones for the music I make to avoid trying to mix while I write...
If you got these for your kids, don't feel embarrassed to use them when you forget your main pair at the office or something.
